The Case for Digital Literacy

While the concept “digital literacy” is used across educational contexts, the Digital Literacy for Ministry team defines it as the interrelated skills needed in 21st century ministry contexts. The Digital Literacies for Ministry are seven empirically identified ministry competencies which allow people to effectively serve and lead their appointed congregations and communities. Our team values the theological education received at traditional institutions – while recognizing the lack of exposure to digital ministry. We hope to remedy that disparity.

Being literate is not just about grammar and vocabulary. Literacy combines understanding of context, nuance, grammar, and vocabulary to draw textual meaning. The same applies to digital literacy. It is about more than just knowing the right buttons to push; it is about knowing how to cultivate community in a digital context, navigate both theologically and technically, and determine if content should be created or curated.

Digital Literacy for Ministry emerged from the e-Formation Learning Community founded by Kyle Oliver and Lisa Kimball at Virginia Theological Seminary. The Rev. Stacy Williams-Duncan joined the team, offering her focus in empirical research and experiences in mixed-method research. Kyle and Stacy continue to actively conduct and publish research in this area. Stacy, assisted by Sarah Stonesifer Boylan and Matt O’Rear, continues to provide the project’s day-to-day leadership.

Captivating, Practical, and Knowledgeable

Captivating, practical, and knowledgeable about where the church has been and things that can help us to keep it vibrant going forward. She has the uncanny ability to bring comprehension of digital ministry applications to a digitally challenged group with a style that puts all at ease. She is a master at demonstrating what we can do locally to enrich the ministries of our congregations via avenues available through technology. It was truly a blessing to have her as a cornerstone presenter at the 2019 National Vergers Guild of the Episcopal Church Annual Conference.
